Maybe, but only in some cases. A recent Israeli study found that some people’s digestive systems are dominated by introduced probiotics, while others are rejected by them. And in another study, the team also found that, along with antibiotics, probiotics can actually stunt the growth of the gut’s natural bacteria.
Through this study, scientists want to warn about the widespread use of probiotics today. Don’t think they’re a miracle digestive drug that works for everyone.
Millions of people are consuming probiotics these days in the hope that their digestive systems will become healthier and prevent many diseases. But that’s not necessarily true. Probiotic supplementation should depend on each individual’s health status.

Probiotics are live microorganisms, usually bacteria, that are believed to have health benefits. Probiotics have been studied for a wide range of conditions, including antibiotic-associated diarrhea, digestive disorders, tooth decay, allergies, eczema, liver disease, and even the flu. But there is no evidence that probiotics improve any condition.
Probiotic supplementation is still a very popular trend. According to a 2012 survey, about 4 million Americans said they regularly used probiotics or prebiotics (food for beneficial bacteria) in a month. In fact, many scientists recommend that probiotics should only be used as medicine, meaning that they should only be used to treat an illness. It has also been found that probiotics that are supplemented from outside are different from the native beneficial bacteria that normally reside in the digestive system.
Participants in the study were given 11 strains of probiotics. After three weeks, the subjects were all given endoscopy to see if there were any other changes. The results of those who took the probiotics were divided into two groups. One group allowed the supplemented bacteria to colonize their digestive system. The other group rejected the supplemented bacteria and had no significant changes in their gut microbiota. The researchers believe this is due to the influence of their gut microbiota and their own genes.
It is time to warn against the widespread use of probiotic supplements because there is not enough evidence to show that they are effective in improving health. The best way to have a healthy gut microbiome is to eat plenty of green vegetables and fruits.
